Abstract: Hospital fires account for approximately 9% of all structure fires in the US annually.  Facilities and safety professionals dedicate significant resources and time preparing for a fire event and maintaining the built environment to reduce the risk of a fire.  This includes drills, inspections, training, and managing compliance with local fire department and building department codes, and maintaining compliance with state health departments, as well as CMS and The Joint Commission standards.

What happens if a fire actually happens inside a healthcare facility?  Are you truly prepared to respond? Are you prepared for the emergency services response?  How will you recover, and how quickly can you return to normal operations?

This presentation will focus on the immediate impacts during the day of / day after, and the recovery period.  Topics covered include: the intensity of the fire department response, fire department operations, immediate impacts to the unit of fire origin as well as the rest of the healthcare organization, command center set up, developing and operationalizing recovery plans, investigating the fire, and documenting for insurance purposes.  The presentation will review lessons learned and provide key take aways all facilities and security professionals will want to hear.  See if years of planning, drilling, and maintaining were effective as you hear the minute by minute, hour by hour review of this actual event.

Topics Covered:

  1. FDNY response protocols
  2. Hospital emergency fire response
  3. Clinical impact
  4. Support services impact
  5. Restoration and recovery
